Diana L. Skaggs / Partner
In and out of the courtroom, Diana L. Skaggs is on the forefront of new developments in the practice of family law and is recognized for her innovation in the field as well as her continued dedication to families, children and public service. She received the Louisville Bar Association’s 2006 Revell Family Law Award in honor of these commitments. Past President of the Kentucky Chapter of the American Academy of Matrimonial Attorneys, where she also served on the national Board of Governors, Skaggs takes an active role in professional organizations and frequently teaches other family law attorneys and judges at continuing legal education courses. She is A.V. rated by Martindale-Hubbell, listed in Best Lawyers in America in the field of family law (Copyright 2014 Woodward/White,Inc. of Aiken S.C.) and selected for inclusion in 2007 through 2014 Super Lawyers as being among the top 5% of family lawyers and one of the top 25 women lawyers in Kentucky across all fields of practice. The Kentucky Chapter of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers honored her with its 2010 “Raising the Bar Award.” Her most recent honor was being elected a Diplomate of The American College of Family Trial Lawyers, a national organization limited to 100 divorce litigators. Skaggs, who received her Juris Doctor degree from the Louis D. Brandeis School of Law at the University of Louisville in 1982, maintains professional memberships and has held offices in several regional and national organizations. She formed Diana L. Skaggs + Associates in 1999, although she has devoted her practice to family law for more than twenty-five years. In 2014, the firm name was changed to Diana L. Skaggs + Partners PLLC and Michelle Eisenmenger Mapes became a partner. Though the firm focuses on all aspects of divorce and family law, Skaggs concentrates her practice in complex financial divorce, including business valuation, trusts, tax, tracing of non-marital funds and integrated solutions for wealth management and preservation. “While most matters are settled privately, my extensive trial experience and our staffing allow us to handle complex litigation where necessary or appropriate,” says Skaggs.
Elizabeth M. Howell / Associate
Elizabeth M. Howell joined the firm in 2014, following her 2013 graduation from the University of Illinois College Of Law with a Juris Doctor degree. While working toward her degree, Howell worked as a law clerk for an Illinois family law firm and assisted clients in a number of family law cases. She fell in love with family law because of the ability to work face-to-face with clients on matters that directly impact their daily lives. She particularly enjoys using the legal process to reduce clients’ stress during what can be a very difficult time.
Howell is involved with the Louisville community through her pro bono work on Title IX, working on behalf of survivors of on-campus sexual violence and assault. Her work includes presentations to area attorneys and law school classes on how Title IX can be utilized to assist survivors.
Howell is passionate about family law, particularly using alternative dispute resolution methods to amicably and efficiently resolve contentious family law matters. She enjoys advocating for her clients both in and out of the courtroom. Her approach to family law puts clients and their goals first.
Sandra G. Ragland / Associate ~ In Memoriam
Sandra G. Ragland joined Diana L. Skaggs + Associates as an associate, after receiving her Juris Doctor degree from the University of Louisville Louis D. Brandeis School of Law in 1999. Prior to becoming an attorney, she worked as a paralegal in family law.
She enjoyed working in many facets of family law. Ragland said she was drawn to cases involving difficult child custody issues and cases in which the parties were ending long-term marriages. She said, “In both situations, I encourage clients to attempt to maintain healthy relationships with ex- spouses, not only for the benefit of their children, but also for their own well-being. I am a strong advocate of a collaborative approach to problem-solving, with a primary focus on meeting the needs of the parties and their children, rather than a lock-step application of statutes and precedents.” Ragland considered her work not only a career, but a calling. Sandra passed away on March 29, 2013, after an illness.
Mary L. Ruiz / Legal Assistant
While Mary Ruiz is a highly experienced and excellent legal assistant, what our clients and colleagues most love about her is her warm and friendly manner. If you call our office for an appointment, Mary will assist you. We have received many, many compliments from callers saying how much they enjoyed speaking with Mary. It is a frightening step for many people to call a lawyer’s office, but when you ask for Mary you will be glad you did. She is exactly who you would want as the woman who lives next door. Mary joined our team in 2005. She has over 36 years of experience as a legal assistant in all areas of law. She particularly enjoys working in a family law firm where her motivation to help others is so well fulfilled.
Alex Kennedy / Legal Assistant
Alex Kennedy began her work with us in 2012 as a receptionist, and upon Rita Horton's retirement was promoted to legal assistant. We are so pleased Alex chose a position with us to begin her career in the legal field!
Rita Horton / Retired
Rita Horton began working for Diana L. Skaggs in 1990 as a legal secretary and provided administrative support primarily for her. As accurate a typist as was ever born, Rita was also a highly valued member of our team for her dependability. If there was snow or ice on the ground, she would nonetheless be in the office at 7:30 a.m. unless someone called her and insisted she not come in. She never missed work and used to have to be told to take more vacation time. Once her children were scattered as far as Guam and she had out-of-town grandchildren, Rita did enjoy her well-deserved vacation time. She attended Purdue University and began her working career at a stock brokerage firm in Milwaukee before moving to Louisville and beginning a new career as a legal assistant for another attorney. Rita retired December 3, 2015. It was our great privilege to have had her in our office for 25 years!
